Madeleine F. Green is an expert in internationalization and higher education and non-profit leadership and management issues. She currently serves as a Senior Fellow at the International Association of Universities and at NAFSA: Association of International Educators and as Senior Program Consultant to The Teagle Foundation. As Senior Fellow at the International Association of Universities, she is spearheading their Internationalization Strategy Advisory Service (ISAS), and has advised universities in Japan, Kenya, Lithuania, and Argentina.
She was the recipient of the 2010 Charles Klasek Award of the Association of International Education Administrators (AIEA) for outstanding service to the field of international education.
Dr. Green served from 1991 to 2010 as Vice President for International Initiatives at the American Council on Education (ACE). ACE is a membership association of U.S. higher education institutions and associations from all sectors. As vice president, she led ACE’s global initiatives and internationalization programs through its Center for International Initiatives (CII).
Over her 35-year career at ACE, Dr. Green held a variety of positions focusing on higher education leadership and management as well as international and global initiatives. She designed and directed programs for member institutions, conducted research, developed grant proposals, and served as facilitator and consultant to institutions in the U.S. and abroad. She directed ACE’s prestigious Fellows Program (1978–1990), which prepares individuals for senior leadership positions; and developed and led seminars for college and university presidents, department chairs, and chief academic officers.
Among the many ACE projects Dr. Green founded and directed were:
• The Kellogg Network on Institutional Transformation and the Kellogg Forum on Higher Education Transformation-- projects on institutional change involving 26 U.S. institutions and a consortium of researchers, funded by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation (1995-2001).
• The Internationalization Laboratory, a program that has engaged more than 50 institutions in reviewing and refining their internationalization programs and strategies (founded 2002, ongoing).
• The Leadership Network on International Education, a network of presidents and chief academic officers dedicated to advancing internationalization (founded 1985, ongoing)
• Internationalization Collaborative, a learning community of some 100 institutions engaged in furthering internationalization (founded 2000, ongoing)
• A capacity building program for historically disadvantaged South African universities funded by the Ford Foundation and USAID (1992–2001),
• A $6.7 million USAID-funded effort to strengthen South African further education and training colleges (2010-2012).
• Seminars for U.S. university presidents and their counterparts from abroad.
She is the author of dozens of books, monographs, research studies, and essays on leadership and management, higher education issues, and internationalization and global higher education.
Dr. Green served as interim president of Mount Vernon College (Washington DC) in 1990–91. She is currently a board member at Juniata College (PA) and has also served on the boards of the International Association of Universities, Sweetbriar College (VA), Wilson College (PA), and the Forum on Education Abroad. She chaired the academic affairs committee of the board at Sweetbriar.
A fluent speaker of French and Spanish, Dr. Green holds a B.A. from Harvard University and a Ph.D. from Columbia University, both in French literature.
